Curves Gym: No men, no makeup, no mirrors

WHAAAT?!

Depends on your reason for going to the gym, you might find their motto quite a bit of a letdown, seeing that it doesn't conform to what most gyms look like. it probably even goes against some people's subconscious notions of the gym as some sort of a dating club, or a VIP lounge, or both. hehe

But Curves gym, focusing on a more specific demographic (you know, us girls!) knew how well their tagline speaks for women who are more concerned with improving their fitness levels, and who simply wanted to work out without being conscious about themselves. And to this extent, Curves serves its purpose by providing a facility that is for women only, has no mirrors at the workout area, and doesn't allow you to wear make-up. ang strict diba?!

PERO JOKE LANG. i have yet to confirm the no make-up part HAHA

Anywaaaay, here's how my first visit went:

Workout area
Curves gym offers circuit workouts using a set of 12 machines that target different parts of the body. They're placed in a circle and in between each of them are recovery pads where you do some light active movements to break the last machine workout you just did. You spend 30 secs. on the machine, then some 45 secs. on the recovery pad... until you've circled around the entire circuit. There's a background music and audio guide naman, plus there's always a coach to help you with the workouts!

When i came in i was welcomed by Coach Tessa, who showed me around the place, introduced me to the machines (and some of the members too!), and interviewed then measured me (homagyasss) for a fitness assessment. haha

Goal setting. naks.
i love how every member gets this sort of initial goal setting interview where the coach assesses your current fitness level, your measurements, your desired weight, health considerations, etc. and helps you come up w/ realistic figures to lose (or gain, depends on your goal) in a month.

The workout

the first circuit was kindof light but i could already feel some sweat. the second circuit though was what made me sweat even more as i had to increase the reps i do on each machine, shempre, to sweat and burn more! ang sarap sa feeling!

the entire workout only took 30 minutes but it was intense enough to cover all parts of my body. very ideal for those on-the-go who didn't want to spend too much time on the gym.

after that, i stayed longer to try their zumba class! it's a zumba circuit where you dance in between machine workouts. i suck at dancing but i'm always trying haha i had a hard time following the steps though cos we were in a circle and i was in front of the instructor, and i suck at mirror imaging, i kept on circling on the wrong path! haha

Facilities

Members' Lounge
Across the lounge is where the comfort rooms and shower area is. There are mirrors here already, don't worry! See those cards below the Curves signage? That's their "Women on Top" for the month of January!

Women on Top
Only goes to show how this gym is serious about helping you achieve your fitness goals!

Locker area
On the other side of the lounge is where the locker area is. Also a place you'd see more inspiration!

Testimonials from members

There's a very warm feeling about the gym that makes me want to come back, also because i'm interested w/ the type of workout they offer! The coaches are very friendly and nice and always ready to help, and it seems like it's home to a community of women who share a common goal and are out to help each other in their quest for fitter a lifestyle! Reading the inspiring stories from the locker doors also encouraged me with my goals of shedding pounds of fat! haha

So, if you're working near (or at) Eastwood City, this is going to be worth your visit!

5 FREE Fitness Apps to help you workout on your own!

So you wanna work out without shelling out a single buck? Got a smartphone? large memory, check? a strong wifi/internet? good. i'll be listing down a few really cool apps that will turn your phone into your very own fitness trainer! only, you have to discipline yourself... which is just about the hardest part diba. haha

1. Nike+ Running

it's my ultimate running companion. if you're new to this GPS tracking thing and like me was confused whether you needed to turn the data on to get a GPS signal... NO. you don't need internet connection to get tracked. you just need to turn on your GPS (or that location icon on the home curtain of your android phone), and give if a few seconds to initialize. then, off you go!

2. Nike+ Training Club

here's one of my favorites. and this is by far the closest to a virtual PT i could get. it has a lot of workout routines for you to try, demo videos, timers, goals, playlist integration, and it's very organized too. you can choose from various fitness regimen (like get lean, get toned, shape up, etc.) and each has a set of timed exercises you could follow to achieve your goal. i tell you, it's pretty intense !

i love it how Nike has become not just a household name when it comes to sportswear, but also an advocate of promoting communities that inspire people to live an active lifestyle. and while you're already there downloading these Nike apps, why not prep yourself up with the right apparel? did you know that especially for women, workout clothes actually inspire you to workout? that's right, and since Nike for women is available online at Zalora Philippines, i suggest you ogle over there for a while, while waiting for your apps to download. but wait, don't forget to read the rest of the post!

3. Daily Yoga

perfect for an early morning stretch. 15 minutes on this will break you a good sweat. the videos are very easy to follow and is audible enough. plus it has 5 default background music which helps you get into that yoga mood (i actually love the music). hahaha

4. Calorie Counter - MyFitnessPal (calorie counter and diet tracker)

it has been really really helpful (so far). here you could log your every calorie intake (or outtake?) from breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and even your workouts (walking, swimming, weight lifting and blah). you get to input your current measurements, your desired measurements, and every time you check out on a day you get a rough estimate of the amount of weight you'd lose (or gain?) if you continue doing what you're at.

i like it cos you could get very specific specially when logging your food intake! you can search up the exact food you ate from their database and you'll get exactly the info you need! (ie. 2 pcs hotcake w/ syrup ... up to the brands of the food you eat! i'd say they have quite an impressive database of food and blah. but it's not just the food, you could also key in your fitness activities, whatever they are, and it'll magically (well, programmatically), deduct the calories burned for you. it helps a lot! hehe so far so good!

5. MX Player (or any video player of your choice)

since when did a video player become a fitness app? well, ever since it can play workout videos! i know right!? haha you see, even without the 4 up there... you can do with just a video player. thing is, you have to download your own workout videos.

My picks:

Insanity workout, Zumba France, 10 min. workout videos, etc.

So there!

What about you? What fitness apps do you have on your phone? Honestly, i don't use all those regularly, the most frequent app i use is the Nike+ Running app. Other than that, it's always a pain having to schedule a workout sesh alone!

*App screenshots are from their respective play store pages

Be Battle Ready with Battle Brew

Okay! this month was chock full of fitness opportunities for me, and being that i'm in the struggling stage when it comes to motivating myself into building the right discipline to achieve a havey na havey body, every opp gets me immensely excited, esp if it's about working out (and eating of course)!

The first waking hours of my valentines day was spent at Crossfit Insurrecto (at Il Terrazo, Tomas Morato, QC) for the opening of Battle Brew kiosk. tsk, so romantic haha. part of the program was to introduce us to crossfit (which gained more respect points from me now!), and to battle us out with other bloggers in a WOD (workout of the day) challenge. out team lost BWAHA but it was sooo fun as i've been aching for a good workout for so long. the WOD reminded me of our wasakan days at MARS. grabe ang sarap lang magpaka-fit. hahaha

So what's Battle Brew?

Battle Brew is your newest weight management and fitness buddy that will help you burn fat, boost focus, and improve your health.

How? Battle Brew's main product isn't actually coffee, but its MCT Oil. it's derived from pure coconut oil, sans the flavor, odor, and other types of triglycerides (fats!) present in it -- short chain, and long chain. ano raaaaw?

okay, let me lecture you a bit cos i learned a lot that day. plus, i actually kindof reminisced my organic chemistry class (which i failed twice lololol) with all these frkn compounds.

MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, a type of saturated fat that is digested easily by the body because it passes straight to the liver, therefore providing instant and sustained energy! Did i get you there or what?!

Okay, even with the ironic suggestion of eating fat to lose weight, the science behind the diet is actually fool proof. numerous studies have proven it (like this one), so it's safe to say that this isn't some fad diet that's bound to be debunked by myth busters someday. haha

So how do you use it?

Add a tablespoon to your morning or pre-workout coffee, and that's it! For more weight loss benefits, chip in another tablespoon of clarified butter. Battle Brew sells a booster pack which contains MCT oil and GHEE clarified butter from their site, so yeahhh you may stock up there. :)

and yes, if you haven't noticed... Battle Brew is pretty much your local Bulletproof Coffee vendor hehe

if you're not a coffee person, suuure there are lots of other ways to use MCT oil. use it on oil based dishes, on your salad dressing, your tea, protein shakes, smoothies, etc. hihi

Anyway, as with any weight management tool... you'll hardly see a difference if you don't couple it without proper workout.

Smart move from the people behind Battle Brew cos they teamed up with gyms and fitness centers (cos they workout too!) to introduce people who already workout to improve their fitness experience, and to encourage those who don't workout (yet) to try and go to the gym sometime to exercise (and not just to stock up on MCT oil lol).

Where do I buy?

You may get your dose of Battle Brew from the following gyms and Crossfit boxes:

Zumba at Hangtuff Fitness, Makati!

last week i was able to join a Zumba session with blogger friends at Hangtuff Fitness, Makati. it's a small gym that offers a wide array of group exercises that you can join at an affordable cost! very convenient to those who work or live within the area of Makati Ave., Ayala Ave., and Gil Puyat as it's just along Jupiter St.!

i had a really great time with the workout! i'm a terrible dancer so i kept hiding behind Leo so I wouldn't get noticed in the mirror hahaha. nonetheless, i broke a good sweat and was impressed by the choreography! nakaka-inspire tuloy mag zumba in fairness! i'll probably update my Just Dance collection (c/o youtube lol)

what i found charming with the gym is how it doesn't invest in expensive mechanical equipment that eventually bores you, but instead promotes class based training that not only builds discipline, but also friendship and camaraderie! i also love how the place could transform into a multipurpose training room. one hour we're doing zumba, and the next hour, poles are being installed for the next class. the gym can accommodate TRX, boxing, and muay thai sessions among others!

Hangtuff Fitness is strategically located at Jupiter St., Makati City (yeahhh where all the chibogans are). It could be hard to find if it's you're first time, but really, it's just located at the ground floor of OPPEN Building (which is still labeled Welding Industries of the Philippines as of writing), just across MetroBank Jupiter branch. :) When you reach the building, you have to walk down the driveway and turn left. The gym is all the way at the edge of building hehe.

A Tour of Treston Health Club

A few weeks back I (together with my sister) paid visit to Treston Health Club, one of the newest wellness centers in Bonifacio Global City. I got a complete look of their facilities, what they offer, and also a sample of their spa services! Here's what I got, you'll definitely want to check this place out...

The Gym

The Treston Health Club gym area boasts of new and advanced workout machines, i'm talking Life Fitness! >8D I couldn't agree better. All their machines are spanking new! If you're looking for a less crowded gym, with new equipment, friendly staff, AND with spa services... this is the place to be!

w/ my sister :D
What they offer:

  • World-class machines and facilities
  • Standard Fitness Training Program
  • Personal Fitness Training Packages available with free use of Body Composition Analysis Machine

Fitness Classes

Apart from the gym, they also have training studios that are aptly equipped and can be used for the following fitness classes

  • TRX
  • Kickboxing
  • Yoga (Flexibility and Balance)
  • Zumba (Cardio Kraze)
  • Taekwondo (For Kids and Adults)

More classes will open up soon! Their studios can also be rented for private training sessions, say dance rehearsals, or exclusive classes. :)

Schedule and Rates

Here's their fitness classes schedule as of now, note that it may change from time to time because classes are on a booking basis. :)

The Spa

What?! they have a spaaaa? Oh yes, very Fitness First diba haha! You'll be surprised actually, they even offer manipedi! havey na havey

We were able to try their foot massage, and maaaan was it heaven! we have a foot massager at home and dare i say that real human hands are far superior in delivering that relaxing feeling. we were administered the Ingham massage, a type of compression massage that doesn't hurt you to the bones unlike regular reflexology methods. super love it.

they also offer tea while they're massaging you and you get to sit on these really plush lazboy recliners. we both fell asleep soundly! sarap!

Spa services are as follows, along with their prices for members and non-members alike. :)

What I think

if you study the rates, the annual fee of 28,000 pesos will set you aback some 2,300 pesos a month. That's way cheaper than Fitness First, considering that they have similar facilities (gym, spa, sauna and steam, and group exercises). The advantages of joining THC is that

- it's located in BGC
- it's NEW so it isn't too crowded yet. you don't have to wait for your turn to use that most coveted pectoral machine
- the equipment are all new so you get the privilege of christening them all with your sweat haha
- it's near (walking distance to) Market! Market! where the terminal is :D

Hope this helps! :)

Milo Marathon Finals 2014

MARS QC Runners! Photo by Excipio Imago Photography
last year, i wasn't able to go to the milo marathon finals because my legs were still too sore from running at Nike We Run Manila which was a week before the milo run. mejo ambisyosa kasi i pegged for 2 consecutive 10k runs with only a week recovery in between. i was a beginner at running and didn't know best. :P

but finally, after a year, i was able to attend na! woooh! and here's my record:

the Milo Marathon Manila Finals was rescheduled a week later (Dec 13) than the original date (Dec 7) due to the threats of typhoon Ruby/Hagupit. luckily i just live in the metro and had no plans on the 13th so i was able to come. but as for those who came from the provinces who qualified for the finals, spent money on transportation, lodging, etc, and had to extend for another week due to the rescheduling, i feel bad for all of them. they can't be blamed for all the hassles they went through. :( it can't be helped though. the marathon has to push through this year, and there are no more available dates for december. >XS

anywaaaaaay, i was supposed to run with my MARS9 buddy, Ken, but she didn't make it huhu. T___T i came in late so i missed the warm up with the other guys haha okay lang din naman. >XD

the run was... great! haha. it's my second time to run around MOA/Pasay Area, my first time was during Red Cross Million Volunteer Run (which was kindof bad), so this is definitely the better of the 2 runs.

they say RunRio is a great run organizer and i couldn't agree more. everything was actually organized. there were km markers everywhere, hydration was sufficient, and everything was pretty much in place. as usual there were a loooot of people who ran, and since i was late, i kindof got mixed with the non-competitive crowd (ie. students) who just pretty much walked and took selfies at every kilometer mark, or wherever there's a large Milo signboard around. i don't get annoyed with them, at some point, i was like them too. hahaha

i felt bad for those who were running 5k with their backpacks on though. apparently, 5k runners aren't entitled baggage stubs so there. good thing APEX has a tent where we can leave our bags! we were even given a tapsi breakfast after the run, and i was finally able to claim my MAR9 singlet! yeyy! >XD

that's pretty much it! late post i know. let me leave you with a JGH (just got home) selfie i took that day! haha

PS: thanks for the ride back kris! >:D

my happiest 5k!

wooooh! this afternoon's jog was the best i had so far. in terms of record and overall feeling. i jogged 5.02km in 43 minutes! that's quite a milestone for me because that's my fastest 5k, and i jogged without stopping! HAHAHA sorry naman sa "PR" ko (kung maituturing). still on my way to 30 minutes! <3

i really wanted to call it a run, but at the (literal) rate at which i was going, i was more jogging than running. nonetheless, i never stopped! that means i'm probably doing something right on account of my breathing skills. haha! skill talaga, yes. cos at some point in every run, we need to pause to catch our breaths. most runners do that on a light jog, i do it on a walk... which drags the record lower so yeah. will work on that! >XD

even though i had a great jog, it wasn't really that smooth. come 3k and my feet started blistering! so i had to adjust my steps to lessen the impact on the sore areas. huhu. then after a kilometer i was feeling side stitches naman! common running problem; so i had to slow down a bit. :(

magkaganun man, push parin!!!

when the nike+ app announced 5k, i was sooo frakking happy i could imagine the gray pavement turning red, lanes being drawn with white strips, and a finish tape waiting to be breasted in slow-mo. BEST. FEELING. EVER.

i don't know what else made this run special, could it be the coffee i drank some 30 minutes before, or the #Drop10Workout i did a few hours back, or just the fact that i'm on vacation? lol. whatever the other reasons may be, THANK YOU LORD FOR THIS RUN! <3

i'm still struggling to realize why i'm so slow. at my age i should be breaking the 30minutes barrier already. after MARS9, i felt stronger, and my succeeding runs have finally become injury-free. for the first time in my life, when i stiffen up and poke myself, i finally feel some hardness and not some disappointing jello of fat haha. >XD

i'm suspecting i have weak lungs. though i have to check w/ a doctor parin. for some reason i want to try getting checked-up at Peak Form! ever since that summer where i lived in a newly painted dorm, my health has declined radically. my lungs are just so blah. better check with the doctor. >XS

anywaaaaay, that's it!

btw i'm so excited this season cos i have a lot of personal projects in tow for the coming days, like:

- selecting works for a new portfolio
- a desk calendar!
- watercolor and lettering stuff
- an obligatory year-ender post
- 2015 wishlist
- backlogs, backlogs, and more backlogs
- reviving #ProjectKorra even though the entire Avatar franchise has just ended and by the time i'm finally Korra-ready, no one could probably relate to my fitness peg anymore. haha

sooooo.... i have to gooo!!!
happy Christmaaaasss!!! <3

Run BGC Urban Adventure 2014

Pinoy Fitness opened a sign up form last week that will allow us to join Run BGC Urban Adventure for FREE if we were among the first 500 to sign up. so right there and then, i filled out the form, submitted it, and invited jeckie, and also some of my college friends to join! it was exciting! FREE SHIRT EH ANO BA. lol. chos

joma, jec, and i :)

anyway, in the end i came with jeckie and joma (his officemate), and together we went to BGC on Saturday (November 29) to collect our kits. chos.

the mechanics says to form a group of 10 people max. we were only 3 but we didn't care cos we thought we could handle all the puzzles and activities naman. sos. haha

but then, while claiming our shirts. they wouldn't let us form a group of just 3. aw. so we had to team up with other people looking to complete their groups. that's where i met kuya Jesus, who was looking for 3 more to complete his team. Amen!

with our team mates!
when all 10 of us huddled up, i was looking at my team and thought, hindi naman kami competitive so it's okay that our group is composed of a bunch of middle aged men who looked like they were only in it for the run. they looked like they could run. and we 3 looked like we could solve puzzles. and that's about what we need in a team right? haha honestly, i was a bit disappointed and thought for a while if we actually have a chance of winning with this team. ang sama ko. sorry po.

QC MARSians spotted!
before the race started, i spotted some QC Marsians and asked them how come they're all here! apparently, the event was also offered for free for MARS (Milo Apex Running School) students and i didn't know because i was absent when it was announced. part of me died and wished i was in their team instead. ang sama sama ko talaga.

but then, SURPRISE SURPRISE! when i got the chance to chat with kuya Jesus, i learned that he and all his companions were BGC GUARDS!!!! OMG! HAHAHAHA i felt like we hit the jackpot! Amen! i just had to highlight that cos i was so shocked and happy! hahaha

i mentally confessed at my prior thoughts. we finally have a chance at winning. HAHAHA #chos

How the game works

Each team will be given a small envelope with puzzle cards that they have to solve. each puzzle will reveal a location in BGC that they have to seek out. on each location, they have to perform a challenge. and on every challenge they complete, they will be awarded stars (3,2,1 stars in order of performance) that will be stamped (well, stickered) on their score cards.

teams will have to perform as much challenges as they can, and earn as much stars as they could. after 3 hours, they must surrender their scorecards back to the commencement area for evaluation.

the winning team will get 50,000 pesos! i don't remember what the other prizes were hahaha!

The first puzzle card we solved led us to 9th Avenue at Bonifacio High Street. i don't know where the hell that was but i thank God our team is composed BGC Guards lang naman *ehem* *ehem* who knew every nook and cranny in BGC. we just had to tell them and they will lead us to the place!

WE WERE NEVER LOST!!!

it fascinates me to no end how they knew every single place in BGC. as in! as we were solving puzzles, we would consult them again and again if any of the words we're forming is making any sense.

"kuya, ano yung market? market market ba yun?"
"ah hindi ibang market yan. dun yun!"

"kuya, ano yung may kalikasan something?"
"kasalikasan yan, dun yan!"

"turf? turfgc?"
"Turf BGC po, dun!"

etc. etc. etc.

HOW COULD IT GET ANY MORE CONVENIENT THAT THAT?! hahaha

we didn't win but we enjoyed a lot! the first activity we did, the one with the BINGO cards was exhausting and at the same time super enjoy! we were tasked to take group pictures with all the items listed in the BINGO card. i could imagine doing this with my college barkada! sobrang saya sana! haha

Pic spam!

drones watching over us
that's a drone up there surveilling the place for cheaters. lol. we were actually called out for opening the envelopes before the announcement to begin took off, but that's because we thought it was already announced. we were just so atat. sorry. the event staff was kind naman not to disqualify us so thank you!
Robot pose at Burgos Circle
Thumbs up with a store employee
With a pet dog or pet cat

Finally

When the game ended we were so exhausted. my knees were so tired, and my tummy was voilently growling for food already. what with all the running, going back and forth to places, and literally dancing in the rain? haha we decided to eat at Murray and D'Vine -- burgers, ribs, and damn good wine! haha

Here's a shot of my food. Heart shaped buns kamown!

According to one staff, some valentines ago they made their buns and patties heart shaped, and the customers liked it and requested not to change it. and that's what they did. i wonder what they would do if we suggested we liked round buns better, or star shaped ones. lol

my Juicy Lucy. 425 pesos. ouch
deeeeym that thick beef patty stuffed with caramelized onions and cheddar cheese. reminds me of Stuff Over at Maginhawa, only waaaaay more affordable. didn't quite enjoy this honestly. Big B parin the best!

going home was terrible cos no taxi would accommodate us. i always understand naman cos makati to fairview is a pain in the gas. i had to add an extra fee para lang makasakay. buti na lang hindi traffic sa EDSA! yeyy!!

cheers to a happy day! >XD
